“Out of the depths I cry out to you, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.” (Psalm 130:1-2).
In Psalm 130, the Psalmist was crying out in despair. Despair is a hopeless state defined as: having no hope to the point of giving up, a state of mind caused by circumstances beyond hope. The Psalmist cries to the Lord for consideration, mercy, and forgiveness for his helpless state.
The beginning of our life in Christ is to hope in the Lord “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him.” (Psalm 62:5).
Hope is restored only through the faithfulness of God “The Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love.” (Psalm 147:11).
Hope is a by-product of perseverance. “We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Thessalonians 1:3).
“And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy “Spirit, whom He has given us.” (Romans 5:5).
